Lionel Messi’s collection of photos, which he uploaded after winning the World Cup with Argentina on Sunday, has become the most-liked post of all time on Instagram.
At Qatar 2022, the 35-year-old completed his title collection when Argentina defeated reigning champions France 4-2 on penalties following an exciting 3-3 extra-time draw.
A few hours after Gonzalo Montiel scored the game-winning penalty kick at Lusail Stadium, Messi posted ten photos on Instagram, the first of which was of him grinning and holding the World Cup trophy high.
With over 46 million likes by Monday afternoon, the post had already surpassed all previous sportsperson posts in popularity.
This outperformed a picture of Messi and Ronaldo playing chess in a Louis Vuitton advertisement that Ronaldo uploaded last month and had just over 42 million likes.
Messi’s post was still behind the well-known egg shot that set a “world record” with 56.2 million likes after being posted on January 4, 2019, at this time.

Messi, however, surpassed that threshold early on Tuesday morning as Argentina had a hero’s welcome in Buenos Aires, and he now has 61.4 million “likes” and counting.
