Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has paid tribute to late Ghana International Christian Atsu Twasam who passed on in Turkey.

Atsu, a footballer who prior to his demise played for Hatayaspor, was trapped under rubble for almost two weeks following a simultaneous earthquake that plunged Turkey and Syria Monday, February 6, 2023.

After days of search through the rubble, his mortal remains was discovered Saturday, February 18.

His body was transported from Turkey to Ghana on Sunday, February 19.

Government officials, the Military and family received his remains at the Kotoka International Airport.

Delivering a tribute on behalf of the government and the President, Vice President Bawumia said the state was hoping to find the former Chelsea and Newcastle star alive but turned out to be a different story.

“The tragedy that occurred in Turkey about a week ago is one that was devastating and we anxiously and nervously prayed that our brother Christian Atsu will be found alive. We hoped against hope for everyday that passed. We prayed and prayed. But alas, when he was found, he was no more,” he stated.

Sharing his condolences with the family, the footballing fraternity, the Ghana Supporters Union and the entire nation, Dr. Bawumia quoted the Holy Bible saying: “From him we came and to him shall we return.”

He assured the family of the state’s involvement in providing a befitting burial for the ex Everton and Bournemouth winger.

“We pray that the soul of Christian Atsu remain in the bosom of the Lord,” he concluded.
