Derek Chauvin, the man who killed George Floyd, has been given a 20-year sentence while authorities work to revoke his freedom.
The former police officer received a nearly 20-year federal prison sentence because he killed George Floyd while violating his civil rights.
The former Minnesota policeman acknowledged in a December plea deal that he kept pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck even after Floyd had lost consciousness.
He also received a sentence of 245 months in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. When the judge read the punishment, Officer Chauvin was present in the courtroom.
When he was brought in, he was dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit and waved to his mother and friends in the gallery.
In a victim impact statement, Floyd’s brother Philonise said that George was killed in front of everyone.
He accused Chauvin of abusing his police training by employing excessive force.
George’s brother also remarked how George would not be there to see his daughter grow up.
In her testimony before the judge, Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, promised her son that she would see him frequently in jail.
She also hoped she would still be alive when he was released.
Chauvin was previously given a 22.5-year prison term after being convicted guilty of Floyd’s murder.
